A word of warning. Reading this book may result in an uncontrollable desire to quit your job, pack your bags and head to an international destination of your choosing.

Boy, did this book strike a chord with me, as it will many travellers I’m sure.

Paris Letters is the memoir of Janice MacLeod, a Canadian who became tired of corporate life and disillusioned with the rat race. The book follows her journey as she makes the decision to quit her job in advertising, save up and spend two years in Europe.

Along the way she rekindles her love for art and the book is riddled with some of her “Paris Letters”; watercolour creations of Paris accompanied by thoughtful messages.

Part personal memoir, part how to guide, this book details the challenges and pleasures that come from packing up everything you own and relocating overseas.

MacLeod writes with such beautiful descriptive prose one can imagine themselves on the streets of Paris, eating hot buttery croissants, or watching the rain from a Parisian cafe, hot chocolate in hand.

The book concludes with a list of 100 things MacLeod did to save enough to live a life she had only dreamed of in the past. Reading her triumphant story you catch yourself considering a move on an international scale. You’ve been warned, severe wanderlust may result from reading Paris Letters.
